Sweet and Sour Tofu

Due to the contrasting flavors from the sauce and texture from the crunchy tofu and chewy center, this sweet and sour tofu recipe is one of the best ways to enjoy extra firm tofu. It’s quick to make and super satisfying.

*To make the tofu*

12 oz extra firm tofu

1 tbsp garlic powder

1-2 tbsp cornstarch

1 tbsp vegetable oil

*To make the sauce*

3 tbsp brown sugar

2 tbsp tomato paste

1.5 tbsp rice vinegar

1 tbsp soy sauce

1/2 cup water

1 tsp cornstarch

*For everything else*

1 red bell pepper, roughly chopped

1 small yellow onion, quartered

2 scallions, roughly chopped

1 tbsp vegetable oil

Cooking Instructions

Drain the tofu and pat dry with a paper towel. Use your hands to tear the tofu into 1-2 inch bite-sized pieces. It doesn’t have to be equal or even pieces - the more edges to it the better. Transfer the tofu to a large bowl and add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cornstarch, and oil. Shake the bowl until the tofu is evenly coated. Air fry at 400F for 10 minutes until golden and crispy.

Combine the ingredients to make the sauce in a bowl.

In a pan, heat up oil and add the onions. After a couple minutes, add the scallions and red bell pepper. Cook for a few minutes before adding the sauce. Heat up the sauce for about a minute. Add the tofu to the pan. Mix everything together and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Serve immediately with a bowl of rice.
